Additional segments may be added, and segment times are subject to change, depending on enrollment.

Performance Etiquette

Students should dress formally: a dress or dress slacks and blouse for ladies; a button-up shirt and slacks for gents (tie and suit jacket are optional).

Students will announce themselves before their performance, and will bow only after they have played all of their pieces. Introductions will follow this format: “My name is _____ and I will be playing ____ by ____.” Your teacher will coach you.

Potluck

Following the recital at the church, we will hold a potluck reception at 3:00 pm at the studio. We encourage you to bring a dish. Please sign up to bring a dish!

Musical Scores & Memorization

You are encouraged but not required to memorize your piece. Please discuss memorization with your teacher. If you or your teacher will be reading your score during the performance, you must prepare your score and bring it to the performance. Loose sheets are not allowed, but you may affix them to a stiff backing such as a manilla folder, or place them in sheet protectors inside of a binder.

Tips for Preparation

Talk to your teacher about tips and tricks for preparing for a performance. Some ideas include:

  • Rehearse your performance at home for friends and family. Imagine yourself in a big performance space. Remember to introduce yourself and bow.

  • Play your piece slowly, and pay attention to every note.

  • Start from different sections of your piece by memory. Number the sections and have a family member quiz you.

  • Imagine playing your right hand for the entire piece. Then do the same for your left hand.

  • Write the names of the chords in your piece, in order.
